Ace Frehley: The truth is somewhere in the middle..

Ace Frehley: The Real Truth Is Somewhere In The Middle
Ace Frehley: The Real Truth Is Somewhere In The Middle

Ultimate Classic Rock
Matthew Wilkening

Legendary original Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley has released his long awaited memoirs, ‘No Regrets,’ which details his time in that band and his own very successful solo career. The book comes partially as the result of five years of sobriety for Frehley, who has very publicly battled addictions to drugs and alcohol in the past.

We talked to Ace about how exactly he went about about cramming four decades of rock and roll tales into one book, what he hopes to accomplish with its publication, and of course, his future musical plans.

What made this the right time to write your book?
I’ve been talking to different people over the years about doing a book, and I didn’t want to attack it while I was working on (his 2009 album) ‘Anomaly.’ Once that came out, it became apparent everybody wanted a book from me. It took a little longer than I anticipated to get it out, but I’m real happy with the end result.

Was it difficult to go through the memories, or to keep things organized?
…All of the above! (followed by that awesome cackling laugh) I have A.D.D. on top of having a bad memory, so my attention span isn’t the best.

Plus everything happened in such a blur, it’d be hard for anyone to remember…
Well, you know in the thank you part of the book at the end, I thank the publisher for extending my deadline, to give me a chance to talk to people, co-workers and friends and family, and get their take on the same stories. You know, I remember it one way, they remember it a different way. So I did some major re-writes with my assistant John Ostrosky. It just made for that much better of a book, it’s more in my own words. I read it over the weekend again, and it’s an unbelievable story.

How did you end up being a roadie for Jimi Hendrix?
In 1970 I went to a peace concert at Randall’s Island, and I wound up sneaking backstage. I ended up setting up Mitch Mitchell’s drums for Hendrix.. it was insane, it was like a dream come true. It was preparing me for what I was in store for, too.

Was there anything you were particularly nervous about diving into?
Not really. Most people have heard bits and pieces of a lot of the stories I’ve told, and there’s some stories in there that some people are unaware of. At my age, and what I’ve been through, a lot of it has been well documented. My addictions, my car accident, everything else in between, I just wanted to set the record straight and give the story from my vantage point.

Are there any misperceptions you were particularly eager to clear up?
I don’t know. You know, everybody’s memory is different. The stuff that happened with Kiss happened over 30 years ago, so Gene‘s side of the story is probably different than my side, and the real truth is probably somewhere in the middle. That’s why it’s called my memoirs!

The book’s title really spells out your intentions…
You know, the title wouldn’t work if I wasn’t sober. The fact that I have five years sobriety, it makes it nice, because in sobriety you’re really not supposed to have regrets about the past. You’re supposed to put the past behind and move forward with a positive outlook on life. It’s good timing, everybody has been chomping at the bit to hear my side on a lot of these stories. Plus, there’s a lot of stories that Paul (Stanley) and Gene never talk about because they weren’t there. Being a roadie for Hendrix, for Janis Joplin in Shea Stadium, on and on. Hanging out at Studio 54. It’s an interesting book, and the more I read it, the more I see it on the big screen! (laughs)

Oh yeah? Who’s gonna play you – have you mentally cast that role yet?
Oh who knows, I’m trying to get past the next five months, touring and doing autographs first.

Where does a new album fit into those plans?
Well, I mean I have some stuff in the can, but I just got a copy of the book Friday, and now I can kind of relax a little and move onto getting back in the studio and working on the next CD.

Any truth that you’ll be releasing a collection of previously unreleased tapes?
Yeah, I have about 100 reel to reel two-inch tapes, with stuff that — I mean, I haven’t even listened to some of it in 25, 30 years. The next thing might be a package including these lost tapes, maybe even a DVD, who knows?

Would you ever go into space for real, on one of those private spacecrafts they’re working on?
I’d consider it. I mean, I think you have to pass a very arduous physical to get up there. But I’m in pretty good shape, so sure! If the opportunity presented itself I’d jump at it.

A thousand apologies

Dear rockers, this is Shannon and I am the blogher for these two awesome girls. I would like to issue an apology for the tardiness but my comp had some indigestion and I had issues posting but I finally figured out the problem. In the meantime, enjoy these pics as a consolation gift.

Bruce Springsteen-Memorabilia needs a home. It will be housed at Monmouth University. It is a collection of printed memorabilia. John Lennon’s tooth is to be auctioned on November 5 for upwards of $16,000. Supposedly gave it to the housekeeper, Dot Jartlett. The daughter of the housekeeper was a fan. This was when he was living in Surrey in the late 60s. Kay won’t buy the tooth for Abi.

Mick Jagger and Martin Scorcese want to do a drama based on 70s Rock Drama. There is a pilot ready. Mick is totally behind the project. It has no titled. Mick did not write it. It was originally conceived as a feature film but went for the TV series route. But wait….there is competition? Showtime is producing a show called ‘Vinyl’ which is set in the 1970s.

Aaron Eckhardt is cast a Denis Wilson and is titled ‘The drummer’. Eckhardt is also the executive producer. He will also rerecord ‘Pacific Ocean Blues’. Keep an eye out for it if you are a Beach Boys fan! It will chronicle the last six years of Wilson’s life.

Tesla-Frank Hannon and Jeff Keith will be answering questions online. It is only an hour long chat. Go to their page. They are planning on going on an acoustic tour.
On November 6th, 2011-MTV Europe will be giving the global icon award to Queen.
William Shatner released a video cover for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ from his solo album Seeking Major Tom. Kay: a whole exercise…but he did it because he can.
On October 25th, Elf will be releasing an album of unreleased tracks by Ronnie James Dio. “Before Elf….there were Elves.” All tracks from 1971.
Ratt is currently working on a new album.

Are they quitting while they are ahead?

Nebraska Lottery has KISS scratch ticket. You could win $50,000. If you don’t, you can win a second chance giveaway and maybe a chance to see Paul Stanley at Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp. First and second place winners will get $1000 and a copy of Destroyer. Third place will get $500.

Our condolences to Bon Scott whose mom, Isa passed away at 94. She was a fan even during the current line up. She was a VIP guest in March 2010. She died walking home from the mall.

Freddie: “I am just me, I am just me. I am very unorganized at times.”
Lots of Freddie birthday events. 2011 is the 40th anniversary of Queen. We Will Rock You is performing. In 1986, he had his ‘Summer Garden Party’. It was for his 40th birthday party. If you happen to be in London, give a call to the Dominion Theatre.
Freddie was a stamp collector as a kid and it is on display.
Freddieforaday.com on facebook! Follow it! It is a fundraising campaign set up in Freddie’s name.

Sting has a birthday coming up next month!
He will have an All Star Charity concert. It is done for the robinhood foundation. A charity in NYC that fights poverty. Also, look for a four disc set called Sting 25 Years. It will be out 9/27. Also, an unreleased 2005 Concert will be out. NEATO-Burrito!!

A follow up story coming out of Canada: ‘Money for nothing’ by Dire Straits was banned in Canada. It is now back on the air. It was banned because the unedited version from the album was played. There is an edited one that blurs out the word ‘faggot’. This complaint came from an anonymous female listener. I am a 21 year old gay female who likes quality. I support artistic freedom but I also support equality.

The Canadian Broadcast Council said that it was not done to ‘slam anyone’. The singer intended it to refer to musicians who take themselves too seriously.

Traveling Wilburys

Episode 140: Traveling Wilburys

The Traveling Wilburys (sometimes shortened to the Wilburys) were an English–American supergroup consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty, accompanied by drummer Jim Keltner.

Met in 1988 in a recording studio. Harrison had a new album out called Cloud 9. Co-written and produced Jeff Lynn. Harrison needed a B-side song. At the time it was customary to bring in buzz to a single by doing a B side. As luck would have it, Dylan and Orbison stopped by. Dylan owned the studio. Petty joined because Harrison loved the sound of his guitar. Left to their own devices, they played off of each other. The song that was born: Handle with care. It would prove to be too catchy as a b-side song. The record company knew that they had something. They did not know it at the time, but the five men were about to become a part of something big: the supergroup.

Rock news
Valerie Bertinelli: has not heard the new Van Halen album. She tweeted: “Who do I have to give birth to to get a copy of the new Van Halen album?” Van Halen was supposed to play in Australia (five shows) but was cancelled due to low ticket sales.
Bret Michaels has filed a lawsuit against Shoreline Cruise. This is over a payment dispute. He signed a contract for two performances on the Cruise for $750,000.
Foreigner: Lou Gramm is hot blooded that his bandmates want Kelly Hansen. He is angry about the misleading line up. He wants the audience to know that it is not the original lead singer.

One of Australia’s wineries has released ACDC wine. “Dry red” “Back in black shiraz” “You shook me all night long moscato.” Have a drink on me!
_______________________________________________________________________

Handle with care proved to be too strong a song to be considered a b-side. The company wanted more of this strange combination. Over the space of ten days, they recorded an album’s worth of songs. Before they could release this odd mixture, they needed a name. George suggested Wilbury. He coined it while recorded ‘Cloud nine’. The quote name from a quote ‘another throwaway Wilbury’. The ‘theme’ of the group was that of half brothers. The album went triple platinum.
Classic rock news Part two
Jani Lane passed away in Woodland Hills, CA. Found in the comfort inn. The autopsy is inconclusive. Toxicology reports are expected in a few weeks. Famous for ‘Cherry Pie’, ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’, ‘Heaven’, ‘Down boys’. He appeared on Celebrity Fit Club.
Lynard Skynard: Johnny Van Zant hospitalized due to complications from an operation. The area was infected with cellulitis. Has a bad infection. Doctor’s orders to remain out of work.

Paul Stanley a dad for the fourth time. Baby girl named Emily Grace. Apparently, Emily Grace was the name that Abi and her husband wanted for their future baby girl. Abi mad! She has now put ‘Natalie’ on reserve.

American Idol will return with the same three judges Lopez, Jackson and Tyler. “Where is this Aerosmith album?” Is Joe Perry right?

The triple album was platinum-that meant high demand-that meant a second album called Wilburys Volume 3. Sadly, Roy Orbison died not long after. His vocals can be heard in the album in ‘End of the line’.
Post Orbison: things never came together. There was a feeling that a tour would spoil the joke. Jeff Lynne is a much in demand record producer. He joined Petty in 2003. Bob just celebrated his 70th.

Damn Yankees special

Kay and Abi August 7 2011

Damn Yankees special

Abi learned that you should not walk around your house naked! :P
1989, Shaw split up from Young lead Styx because it was too theatrical, Jack Blades took break from Nightranger and Ted Nugent had something in common: The Damn Yankees. It came from a question someone asked Uncle Ted after rumors circulated that he was forming a side group with Tommy Shaw??? His reponse: “I don’t know, we will probably sound like a bunch of damn Yankees!”

Classic rock news

Paul McCartney believes that he was hacked by British media. He was promoting a documentary about 9/11 when he was asked how he was going. He said ‘I believe that I have been hacked….more people than we know know about it.”

Alice Cooper: Anticipating his release of Welcome to my nightmare 2. New album will be out September 13, 2011. Vocal performances include Ke$ha, Michael Bruce and Neal Smith. With Ke$ha he will perform the first single “I’ll bite your face off.” Desmond Child is back. Visit nightswithalicecooper.com. He will branch into the world of amusement parks. It is inconjunction with his new release. He will have a maze called…..wait for it…..Welcome to my Nightmare. Part of the Halloween Horror Nights event in California.

Queen: reboot and rerelease. Queen appeared in Wembley Stadium in 1986. Why not rerelease it on DVD? Out on 9/5/2011. It would have been Freddy’s 55th birthday. Two disc set. Interviews with Brian and Roger. A twenty five minute special is included.
More reissues: bands always do that. Why? Is this an artist or label thing? Henry Rollins says ‘usually is involved, it is a good thing. When it is not, it is about money.’ NIN Trent Reznor tweeted about the 1989 rerelease “we had nothing to do with it.”
Block 2

Damn Yankees: Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades, Ted Nugent and Michael Cardelone clicked. Tommy tired of the orchestrated sound of Styx jumped into the project. Their first album had ‘High enough’ and jumped to number one. With a hit on their hands, they had to hit the road.

News

Former Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing wanted to set up a marquee at his home in Shropshire, England. Wanted to build a tavern to perform weddings. Authorities are getting involved because it might disturb other people. Results are pending. Abi wants to get married BY KK Downing.

Slash and Perla Hudson have decided to leave their Los Angeles Mansion. Put it up on market for 9.5 million. The kitchen has ‘two subzero fridges’.

Abi went to the same high school as Iggy Pop. Pop and the Stooges have a new DVD Raw Power Live coming out late September.

1990-1993 the Damn Yankees were a hot ticket. Stage shows were high energy and loud. Nugent liked to show off his love for bow hunting. He used Hussein as a target. It was a reference to the Gulf War. In mid 1991, Damn Yankees shared the bill with Styx. DeYoung replaced Tommy. Things had gotten heated. Tommy would play ‘Babe’ (a song by Dennis DeYoung). Ted would come and break the guitar.
